Energy Star: More Than Just Savings

What is an Energy Star rating, and why does it matter? Read on to discover how it can help you.

Along with lowering energy costs, shrinking your carbon footprint is something you might have heard a little bit about. Energy Star, a federal program headed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), was established in 1992 to reduce pollution and energy consumption under the Clean Air Act. Since then, according to energystar.gov, the program has “helped American families and businesses save 5 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity, avoid more than $450 billion in energy costs, and achieve 4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions.” The far-reaching program saved Americans $39 billion in energy costs in 2019 alone. Energy Star certification is available, not only for products, but also for qualifying homes, buildings, and businesses.

In the retail sector, the Energy Star logo helps consumers identify which products have passed the program’s stringent guidelines. According to the Energy Star website, refrigerators that carry the rating increase efficiency by at least 15 percent, and Energy Star-certified televisions consume half or less of the wattage compared with their non-certified counterparts. Certified products reduce both energy and water consumption, and put more dollars in your pocket at the end of the day.
